And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.
1 John 3:3-10
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.
Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him.
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Paul sums it up nicely in Romans chapter 6:
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Romans 6:15-18
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
This is the gospel in a nutshell. Jesus died to save us from the condemnation of the Law, and to give us grace and power to defeat sin. Here, now, on this Earth. We WERE servants of sin. But at some point in your life, God makes you aware of the true gospel – that in order to be saved, you need to turn, repent, believe in Jesus, and He gives you power to stop sinning. It is then possible to be transformed, over time, to become like Him.
There are times when you may fall. But it is not how often you fall, but how often you get back up!
Trying to defeat sin on your own is impossible. But with God, all things are possible. “Without me, ye can do nothing”.
Jesus promises many rewards to those that overcome in Revelation chapters 2 and 3.
Overcome what? SIN!
Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Acts 3:26
Notice that last part. God gave us Jesus to bless us and turn us away from our sins. Notice it doesn’t say forgive in this verse. Turning away means to stop doing them. God’s purpose is to bring us back to what we were in Eden, before sin.
Remember Jesus’ last words to the woman caught in adultery after He forgave her:
…go, and sin no more.
John 9:11
